Penang

Today, Sunday Feb 5th, we arrived at the island of Penang. It has a long history as a trading stop on the silk route and as a British military base.  We took the Hop-on, Hop-off bus tour and saw a good deal of the old town.

Lots of buildings with British architectural influence

Including the Anglican Cathedrale

We got off the bus to visit the Burmese and Thai Buddhist temples

They were very rich in Buddhist culture and very beautiful

People were lined up to pray

The Thai temple had a distinctive Thai look to the design

Inside had a massive reclining Buda statue

Protected by this stone elephant

There was also a large Indian population on the island with their Hindu temples

Local street scenes

There were several very large homes on the island

And since Malaysia is a large Muslim country there were also several Mosques

And a Chinese Taoist temple as well
